Cyprus : Untitled

A group exhibition: Julie Menelaou | Katie Sabry | Kelly Norman | Sheila Raven

Sheila Raven
“My main sources of inspiration are mortality, light and colour that I find within the landscape and then translate into my own personal vision. The bleached out white of the trees represents the heat, age and anthropomorphic bone-like qualities that I see. My need for muscularity and delicacy is an ongoing challenge and working with mixed media helps me to find a balance between the two, creating a tangible tension.”
Sheila Raven was was born and raised in the UK. She has earned the Queens guide award and bronze Duke of Edinburgh award at a very young age. She has graduated from the UCA in London with a BA(Hons) in Painting. She has exhibited in various group exhibitions and won an European award in 2005. Her work was featured in the Discover Art magazine in 2015 and has been acquired by collectors in the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Armenia, Poland and Cyprus. She currently lives and works in Cyprus.

Kelly Norman
“The works presented in Untitled are studies (charcoal drawings) based on 'plein air’, exploring natural patterns in the fields and hills where I live in Pentakomo. Focusing on mark making, line and tone my intention is to abstract these drawings and rework as paintings homogenizing the two mediums together.”

Kelly Norman was born and raised in the UK. After graduating from the University of Portsmouth with a BA Hons in Visual Studies, she moved to London and became a resident artist at the Cable Street Studios. She worked at Tate Modern Gallery and then in the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. She completed a Post Graduate Dip in Fine Art at The Cyprus College of Art under the tuition of the late Stass Paraskos. She has had three solo exhibitions and regularly exhibits in group shows in Cyprus and UK. In November 2016 her work was selected for the 7th Mixed Media Exhibition at Lessedra Gallery in Sofia Bulgaria. The artist also teaches Art and holds workshops for children and adults from her studio in Pentakomo. She is currently working towards her 4th solo show in November 2017.

Katie Sabry
“This collection of watercolours is a journey through my dreams , love of fairytales, and belief that magic and magical creatures are all around us; if you sit still, look and listen, they are all there!
The dragon series of paintings began in January 2015; my trigger was a large painting at Saint Hilarion castle in North Cyprus. When I finished the picture and stepped back, I realised that the entire mountain was like a dragon, which reminded me of how, ever since childhood, I had felt that Cyprus was full of strange hills that resembled large reptiles backs: sleeping dragons…
Enjoy the journey…”

Katie Sabry was born in the U.K. and grew up in Kyrenia. She finished her studies at the York School of Art in England, the Rome Academy of Fine Art and the Luciana Notturni School of Mosaic Art in Italy.
She has lived and worked as an artist in Cyprus since 1987, and has participated in exhibitions in both in Cyprus and abroad since 1982.
The artist works in watercolour, oils, pastels and mixed media mosaics. She currently lives and works in Limassol.

Julie Menelaou
“Human deer portrayed through an existentialism perceptive journey of lines that run in ink, in and out from the mind in a sort of suspended animation.

A walk through a place in time…
From a cold chill under the trees and on light hoofs they sprint back once more through the seasons.
Woodlands and Seascapes always home where humandeer fancifully roam.’’

Julie Menelaou was born in England and has lived and worked in Cyprus since graduating from Amersham College of Art & Design Buckinghamshire with a BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design. She completed a correspondence City & Guilds Design course in Regents Academy London. In the summer of 2015 she attended a short course at CSM in London in Expressive Painting tutored by Ewa Garglinska, one of the leading Professors at the University for the last thirty years, and received a certificate of High Achievement. She has worked as a graphic designer and teaches Art to children and adults from her studio in Limassol. Her Human Deer illustrations have been featured in London’s Rockland Literature magazine in 2016. She has sold works in the UK and Cyprus and has participated in group exhibitions in Cyprus and the UK. She is currently working towards her first solo exhibition to be held in September 2017.
