Stella Afxentiou - Up-set
Rouan Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Stella Afxentiou, entitled, Up-set.
“And the rumor that there was someone who knew how to look, stirred those less visible creatures...” Rainer Maria Rilke
In this work, which could well be called, Another Dimension, Stella Afxentiou mirrors unforeseen feelings to do with the relationship between subject and object. Her artworks approach their subject matter with a visual, beyond a conventional perception and representation of objects, and which allows intuitive impressions as they refer to the unconscious world and its symbolic language. The choice of figures and the objects that accompany them, point to a past and a childhood, whereby they function as a visual extension of their psychology. It is in this way that they compose what we call, psychological realism. The humorous and caustic mood of the works places them in a playful world where we are called on to see the world again through the gaze of the neglected child inside us…
Stella Afxentiou was born in 1980 in Limassol, where she lives and works. She holds a Bachelors Honors Degree in Fine Arts & Technology from a private school in Athens, certified by Middlesex University, London, where she went on to complete her Masters Degree in Fine Art Theory and Practice. She has participated in Group shows in Cyprus and abroad. Her visual media involve painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, video, and performance. And her work deals with negotiating issues largely to do with emotional and social identity. As the artist herself says: “Art is an experience that moves parallel to life, and artwork functions very often as “the mirrors” of all that have been stored in us, either as fragments of memory or emotional states. Very often we witness how a small part of our lives lasts long enough to determine behaviors and reactions. So let's look at it very closely. Maybe this way, we will find a way to restore our lives.”
