Vasilis Michaelides: The other aspect
The concert, featuring selected poems by the great Cypriot poet, Vasilis Michaelides, set to music by Larkos Larkou, presents a different approach, which sheds new light to the poet’s oeuvre. This multilevel musical performance, in which Larkos employs instrumental and vocal ensembles, and soloists, emphasising on the distinctly dramatic character of Michaelides’ poetry, presents the most important aspects of his poetic oeuvre: the Cypriot dialect in its literary and scholarly dimension, the peculiar katharevousa with demotic elements, which the poet uses in most of his works, his humour, the erotic dimensions of his poetry, his existential verve, his nihilism, his adoration of Cyprus as a geographical and historical location, his exasperation with the conditions in which he lived, as well as the series of ill-fated circumstances that ultimately led him to destruction.
