Cyprus : Violin and Piano Recital

A member of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and a solo violinist Sorin Alexandru Horlea, and an internationally renowned Russian-American pianist Elizaveta Kopelman perform sonatas by Enescu, Debussy and Papageorgio. This concert is presented by the Romanian Embassy of Cyprus in celebration of 50 years of Diplomatic Relations between the two countries.

Sorin was born in Bucharest in 1975 and started the violin at the age of 8. He graduated from "George Enescu Music High-School" where he studied under maestro Octav Savitchi and "Ciprian Porumbescu Music University" where his Professor was maestro Daniel Podlovschi. He took part in summer-courses with Viktor Pikaizen and Eugen Sarbu. In 1997 he won the third prize at the “George Enescu – Childhood Memories” contest in Bucharest. During his university studies he played in the "Radio Chamber Orchestra", "Philarmonia Chamber Orchestra" and “Bucharest Opera” but mainly in "George Enescu Philharmonic". In 2000 he moved to Lebanon to fulfil his position in “Lebanese National Symphony Orchestra", where he became the assistant concert master. In 2005 he moved to Cyprus to play with the “Cyprus Symphony Orchestra”. He is also working as an associate trainer of the Cyprus Youth Orchestra, and as a teacher of the “Music Workshop” under “Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation”. He performed lots of concerts and recitals as a soloist and in various chamber groups in Romania, France, Netherlands, Lebanon and Cyprus. Sorin also performs concerts in other styles including jazz and folk. He is member of "Cyprus String Quartet", also member of folk band "Danube Quartet".

Elizaveta Kopelman Piano
Elizaveta was born in Moscow in 1974 into a family of musicians. She studied at the Central School of Music with Dina Parakhina, and with Arnaldo Cohen at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she won numerous prizes and awards. In 1995 Elizaveta was selected for representation by the prestigious Young Concert Artist Trust in London. She has appeared as a soloist throughout the UK, Europe, USA and South America including debut recitals and concerti at the Purcell Room, Harewood House, Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Opera House, Le Salle Cortot, Bridgewater Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, among others. Her chamber music collaborations include violinists Priya Mitchell, Lucy Gould, Shmuel Ashkenasi, violist Jeanne Mallow and Michael Klotz, cellists David Geber, Julia Lichten, Nathaniel Rosen and Alexander Chaushian, the Leopold String Trio, Ying Quartet, Jupiter Chamber Players, and members of the Vermeer String Quartet, New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestras. Elizaveta has appeared at such festivals as the Mozarteum Argentino, Flanders (Belgium), Mecklenburgh ( Germany ), Pharos ( Cyprus ), Summit ( USA ) and Cratfield ( UK ), where in 2004 she performed Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues. At the opening of the 1999/2000 seasons she performed Mozart’s Concerto K.467 at the Royal Festival Hall with the London Chamber Orchestra. Other concerto performances include Rachmaninov Paganini Variations with the London Concert Orchestra and with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Shostakovich Concerto No.2 with the London Philharmonic, Rachmaninov Concerto nr.2 and Beethoven Concertos nos.4 & 5 with the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, and the Schumann Concerto with the Guildford Philharmonic. In February 2002 Elizaveta performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the New York Chamber Symphony at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. In the past few years she has performed extensively throughout the US, Europe and the Middle East. Last year’s highlights include tours of Spain and Holland with the Kopelman Quartet, performances of Arensky and Tchaikovsky piano trios at the Concertgebouw Hall in Amsterdam, and the recording of Shostakovich Violin Sonata with Shem Guibbory for MSR Classics. Elizaveta has given live broadcasts for both BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM, appeared on Anglia TV and recorded for Naxos and Boston Records. She also performs regularly with her father, violinist Mikhail Kopelman, former leader of the Borodin String Quartet. Future engagements include recitals, and chamber music appearances in New York, Washington and Baltimore, as well as several European tours. The recording of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Piano Quintet with the Kopelman Quartet is due for release this year on Nimbus label.
