Volcanoes, the life of Earth
The exhibition is organized by the French Institute of Cyprus, In collaboration with the Hellenic Bank, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Department of Geology of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment.
This exhibition "Volcanoes, the life of Earth", presented in Greek and French, has three components:
1. an interactive exhibition displaying experiments
2. stones and minerals from Cyprus (provided by the Department of Geology)
3. old books, Neapolitan gouaches, prints and photographs (from private collections).
Its purpose is to present to the public the active volcanism as we know it today, and the story of this science born out of dramatic events caused by major eruptions.
Active volcanism is presented through a series of educational panels prepared by earth scientists, of digital documents and experimentation tables available to visitors. The exhibition, entitled "Volcanoes, the life of Earth" gives us a better understanding of all volcanic phenomena: their place in the Universe, their origins and their locations on the surface of our globe, their dangers but also their benefits, their interactions with humans and their prevention.
The history and development of volcanology will, on the other hand, be presented through texts, prints and original paintings, and in particular the exhibition ofCampi Phlegrei, major work published at the end of the 18th century by Sir William Hamilton, Ambassador of the Kingdom of England in Naples, Italy, and considered by many as the first "volcanologist".
Finally, this exhibition is complemented by maps, rocks and minerals representing the geology of Cyprus.
