Wild Strawberries (Smultronstället)

Crotchety retired doctor Isak Borg travels from Stockholm to Lund, Sweden, with his pregnant and unhappy daughter-in-law, Marianne, in order to receive an honorary degree from his alma mater. Along the way, they encounter a series of hitchhikers, each of whom causes the elderly doctor to muse upon the pleasures and failures of his own life. These include the vivacious young Sara, a dead ringer for the doctor's own first love.

Before the screening of ‘Wild Strawberries’, which will be introduced by film director Kyros Papavassiliou, we will screen the premiere of ‘Aesthetics of Resistance’ a short dance docu-fiction by Christiana Ioannou. Based on ‘The Monologue’, one of Bergman's theatre texts, the documentary tries to approach the celebrated Swedish director through a more personal but also experimental dramaturgical and choreographic point of view.

Ingmar Bergman is one of the most important and influential film and theater directors of the 20th Century. His cinematic legacy is still relevant and the unique aesthetic quality of his films never ceases to impress audiences all over the globe. 2018 is a landmark year, since it will be 100 years from Bergman’s birth (Uppsala, 14 July 1918).

The screening of ‘Wild Strawberries’ is the third in the series of screenings to celebrate the Centenary since the birth of Ingmar Bergman. The series of screenings is organized by The Cultural Workshop Ayion Omologiton, with the collaboration of The Embassy of Sweden in Cyprus and the Cyprus Contemporary Film Center, Cynema Xanthis 3 and Pantheon Cinema, and with the support of The Cultural Services of The Ministry of Education and Culture of The Republic of Cyprus.
