Willian Dreghorn - My Pentadaktylos
Opus 39 Gallery is hosting an exhibition of ink drawings & watercolours by Dr. William Dreghorn (1908-2001).
The exhibition will be opened by Mr. Sophocles Fyttis, Member of Parliament of the Kyrenia Constituency, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Human Rights and Member of the House Standing Committee on Refugees-Enclaved-Missing-Adversely Affected Persons of the House of Representatives, on Monday, 20 April 2015 at 7.30p.m.
During late 1960 and early 1970, a group of Cypriot geographers founded the Cyprus Geographical Association, and began their research and studies for the mapping of the Cyprus landscape. The first region for fieldwork was the Pentadaktylos mountain range. At the same time, a British professor of physical geography, Dr. William Dreghorn, arrived to Cyprus and having decided to retire on the island joined the group of Cypriot geographers. His contribution was significant.
These drawings, besides their artistic and aesthetic value, also have a political and national message to convey. It would revive memories of the unforgettable landscape, not knowing if the chance will be given in the future to an artist to capture in the same way the uniqueness of the Pentadaktylos landscape.
