Cyprus : William Shakespeare: Othello

Giorgos Kimoulis (Othello), Κonstantinos Markoulakis (Iago), Smaragda Karidis (Desdemona), Gogo Brebou (Aimilia) and Alexandros Bourdoumis (Cassius), featuring a troupe of 11 other acclaimed actors, present Shakespeare’s “Othello”.

Translated and Directed by Giorgos Kimoulis and Konstantinos Markoulakis, stage set by Athanasia Smaragdi, costumes by Maria Karapouliou and lighting by Eliza Alexandropoulou.

“Othello” is one of the most important works of William Shakespeare. Written in 1603, the premiere of “Othello” took place at Whitehall Palace in 1604. A tragic story of jealousy, betrayed trust and revenge created by the fear of something different. The play takes place in Cyprus, under Venetian domination. Othello is a Mauritanian high-ranking officer in the Army of the Republic of Venice.

He is married and deeply in love with Desdemona. When Othello promotes an inexperienced soldier instead of Iago, he becomes the victim of vengeance. Taking advantage of Othello’s passion for Desdemona, Iagos makes Othello believe that his wife is cheating on him. Othello, blinded by jealousy murders Desdemona and then commits suicide.

Through the heroes of the work the audience will be confronted with timeless passions that can lead into destruction. Love, jealousy, excessive ambition, hatred and betrayal.
