William Shakespeare: Pericles
What I have been I have forgot to know; But what I am, want teaches me to think on: A man throng’d up with cold. (Act 2, Scene 1)
"Pericles" is the show that fascinated both audience and critics in the Globe to Globe Festival for William Shakespeare in London.
One of Shakespeare’s late works, "Pericles" is an exciting but rarely performed play. Yannis Houvardas, Artistic Director of the Greek National Theatre, directs a production based on the ensemble power of 12 of the best Greek actors: collective dramatic narration with extreme humour and darkness, continuous transformations, a bare, hostile and wondrous stage, a minimum of equipment and tremendous physical intensity characterize the action.
The Plot
Pericles’ quest for a family of his own and a strong state brings him, after many adventures on land and at sea, to Pentapolis where he marries Thaisa, who bears him a daughter named Marina but dies in labor during a tempest at sea. The girl grows away from her wandering father, is saved from murder by pirates, but ends up in a brothel in Mytilene. Her innate innocence protects her from the customers of the brothel until father and daughter find each other on board a ship outside of Mytilene. They are joined by
Thaisa who has miraculously survived and is now a priestess at the temple of Diana in Ephesus. At last, Pericles’ family is reunited.
