Witnesses by 4:4
Peter’s Gallery cordially invites you to the artists’ collective 4:4 second exhibition entitled “Witnesses” at Peter’s Gallery in Limassol on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 8:00 pm.
The exhibition will be opened by the Mayor of Limassol Mr. Andreas Christou.
4:4 consists of the four artists; Ioanna Kythreotou, Thekla Papadopoulou, Elena Tsigaridou and John Warren. They have expanded and developed their previous themes, further exploring their common journeys into representational and abstract worlds. The title “Witnesses” bears testimony to their unique perception and response to the phenomenal world and to their interpretation of emotional and other inner states.
Thekla Papadopoulou and John Warren have used motifs in the seascape and landscape as starting points for highly personal dialogues with the physical creation. Papadopoulou’s experimental and richly textured canvases invoke the dynamics, mystery and the unfettered motion of the untamed sea. Her dexterous use of different media including sand, vitro paint, varnish and found materials add further layers of ambivalence and enigma to her compositions.
John Warren has used the landscape as a source of inspiration for a sequence of abstract paintings where forms have been processed through memory and association. The resulting images are lighter in mood than previous works and reflect colours, sensations and atmosphere experienced in spring and summer. A sense of flux and metamorphosis permeates his work.
The theme of interiors including covered markets, abandoned warehouses and solitary rooms is now prevalent in Ioanna Kythreotou’s recent work. A profound sense of loneliness and desolate beauty haunts these paintings due in part to the absence of the human presence and also to Kythreotou’s consummate skill with colour and a soft-focus technique that imbues the subject with a shimmering ethereal light.
Meanwhile Elena Tsigaridou has produced a set of large ink drawings imbued with delicate observation and romantic lyricism. Based on an intuitive grasp of the natural world, Tsigaridou has filtered her experiences into a personal and contemporary visual language, where a portrait, insect or bird hovers on the edge of dream, reverie and myth. These finely rendered images provoke us to look beneath the surface into the realm of strange alliances and meanings.
Although the group 4:4 work in diverse ways their common discourse is apparent as a celebration and voyage of exploration into both the visible and the unseen. All four are Art and Design teachers at the American Academy of Larnaca and share similar approaches in their ideas and methods.
