wonderings of the (un)conscious mind

Cyprus : wonderings of the (un)conscious mind

wonderings of the (un)conscious mind
solo exhibition by Christina Papakyriakou.

'Oasi, space for visual experimentations’ presents 'wonderings of the (un) conscious mind', an exhibition based on the artistic practice of Christina Papakyriacou curated by Sylia Panayiotidou. The exhibition takes a retrospective twist, as it presents works from the beginning of the artist’s career, presenting a variety of media including painting, drawing, video, art performance, and collaborative projects.

Being an artist who deals with the human psyche and the materialism that surrounds it, Christina Papakyriakou constantly comes to a point where she is in constant conflict with her own self. Her work is the artistic ‘translation’ of her personal experiences, her everyday life, and the friction between herself and those around her. By using a variety of experimental processes, she creates images which primarily reflect her own psyche in a symbolic manner. With her subconscious being the main ‘tool’, she (re)acts on the paper / canvas in an almost psychedelic way, taken into a dreamy state by various visual, auditory and sentimental stimuli.
Since the artist tends to work by using a variety of media, there was a personal need to organise a more comprehensive overview of her practice. By thoroughly analysing the manner in which she has handled her need for
self-expression, the artist can then recognise the most important periods of her career, helping her evolve artistically.

“A walk through the subconscious.
A quest to find one’s self through an intangible, dreamy world.
Symbols and stereotypes collide with personal experiences -
something that could determine the evolution of a person. In both conscious and unconscious worlds. The challenge begins from the moment that one feels the need to walk this path. An introspection within the most hidden parts of ourselves. It is indeed a rugged route. Exposing parts of yourself that are deeply rooted, reaching as to their darkest fragments.”
