“ …And even as he, who, with distressful breath,
Forth issued from the sea upon the shore,
Turns to the water perilous and gazes;
So did my soul, that still was fleeing onward,
Turn itself back to re-behold the pass
Which never yet a living person left….”

My story
Amfidromo Chorotheatro
Α dance story dedicated to the life of Souveneeta Jaysinghe. Away from her country, an immigrant for 25 years. She still supports financially her ‘unknown’ family feeling homesick of a ‘motherland’ which is only a thought. Ηer ‘motherland’ should actually be the land where her life and her truth is. Her motherland is now the one she is obliged to serve.

Dancer – Viky Kalla
Music –Demetris Zavros
Song/text – Souveneeta Jaysinghe

The soul’s dilemma
Athena Georgiou
(Dance residencies/ Dancehouse Lefkosia March-April 2015)
The choreography explores the idea of death, and in particular of sudden death, at the moment the soul separates from the body. It is based on a study of philosophical and ethnographic theories related to the separation of the soul from the body, mainly the theories of ancient philosophers Plato and Socrates, and the philosophy of Hinduism. These theories refer to the relationship of body and soul as one of a prisoner and a captive, and present the journey of the soul after the event of death until it is released from the material world, is purified, and gains immortality.
The body-soul relationship could be considered as one of love, where eros symbolizes the desire for more life and death its dissolution.
'The soul has to cross mountains and seas and rivers, sometimes over hanging bridges and sometimes with vigourless ships, or it has to descend through caves, and take decisions at unfamiliar crossroads, drifting in darkness and diversions, climbing or descending cliffs, discerning passages through chaotic labyrinths, until it reaches the land of souls.'

(Dance residencies/ Dancehouse Lefkosia March-April 2015)
In the sense that the phenomenon of memory is contingent on what is forgotten or absent, repetition and the double, matter and memory will rehearse the correlations among trauma, death, and the unconscious, between the visible and the invisible, the past and the present. A choreographic fragment based on ghostly theatricality and Freud’s uncanny.
