World Music Festival: Film Screening 'Gadjo Dilo'
Paphos Music Lovers, in the context of the World Music Festival present the screening of the film ‘Gadjo Dilo’, at Technopolis 20, on Wednesday, 30th of October 2019, at 8pm.
Join us in an exciting journey with Gypsy vibes and music during the screening of the movie ‘Gadjo Dilo’, which in Romani means ‘crazy stranger’, ‘crazy outsider’. The title stranger – Stéphane (Romain Duris) from Paris – is deeply in love with gypsy music, just like his father. He decides to go to Romania and search for the folk singer Nora Luca. Eventually, he ends up in the commune of Gypsies and despite the cultural differences and language barrier, Stéphane finds his place among his new friends. The amazing, unpredictable journey gives him feelings and experiences which he did not expect. But the myth of free Gypsy spirit is destroyed with the return of a young Roma from prison, who is seeking revenge on his enemy. Death brutally enters that magical world which fascinates Stéphane and nothing stays as it was before.
Tony Gatlif, the director of the movie "Exils" (2004) awarded in Cannes, is - alongside Emir Kusturica - one of the most connected to the tradition of Gypsy directors. He is a director, screenwriter, actor, and also a respected composer, and although he holds French citizenship, he identifies himself with his Algerian Gypsies ancestors (he describes the search for Algerian roots in "Exils"). "Gadjo dilo" is the last part of the Gypsy trilogy, which was opened in 1983 with the movie "Les Princes" (Grand Prix Special des Amériques at the festival in Montréal). The next part of the trilogy, "Latcho Drom" (1993) won the prestigious Un Certain Regard section in Cannes. “Gadjo Dilo” won Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and Silver Leopard at the International Film Festival in Locarno, and César Award for the Best Music. Romain Duris and Rona Hartner who played the main roles in the movie were nominated and won many prestigious festival awards in Europe, such as Crystal Star in Brussels, Prix Michel Simon, César Awards, Special Prize in Locarno.
