In the World of Myth and Fairytales
The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Yiorgos Kountouris, presents Wagner’s comic opera The mastersingers of Nurnberg (overture), Andy Skordis’ ballet, inspired by the myth of Europa’s abduction by Zeus, as well as Rimsky-Korsakov’s sensual symphonic poem Scheherazade Op.35.
Wagner’s comic opera The mastersingers of Nurnberg draws its inspiration from the guild of amateur poets and composers of Nurnberg in the 16th c.’; yet, the plot itself is the composer’s own. Cypriot composer Andy Skordis’ ballet is inspired by the myth of the abduction of Europa by Zeus: Europa rides Zeus (disguised as a Bull), who travels her above the sea until they reach Crete… but, who is guiding whom after all? Rimsky-Korsakov’s sensual symphonic poem Scheherazade evokes, according to the composer, “a kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images” from A Thousand and One Nights, such as Sinbad the Sailor and the woodcutter Ali Baba.
