Writing a story, out of nowhere - Melissa Hekkers
Creative writing workshop for children aged 8-12 years old by journalist & children’s book author Melissa Hekkers
The inspiration behind this children’s workshop are the paintings in the permanent collection of the museum. Divided into two (or more groups depending on participation), one of the groups will select a painting from the collection which inspires them. Based on it, the group will write three or four sentences on the art work and with the help of the facilitator and through group discussion, compose them into the beginning of a story.
The second group will then continue writing the story, reading the existing paragraph and adding another, without seeing the painting, enabling imagination and creativity to flow.
This back and forth is repeated a number of times, depending on the amount of groups and the drive of the story which again will be guided by the facilitator.
At the end, the groups get together and read the story out loud and see the painting that inspired it.
The workshop aim is based on the idea that a story can be made out of anything and aspires to stimulate imagination in participating children as well as assisting them into a guided story writing exercise.
