Yiannis Sakellis (FlevaRes Project)
The FlevaRes Project, a combined effort by Cypriot artists supported by the Vasilias Nikoklis Inn, nourishes art and music lovers for the second time this year.
The Paphian visual artist Yiannis Sakellis, a graduate of the “Pietro Vannucci” Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia, who shows that he has found his individual voice despite his young age, proposes new ideas through an interesting technique: working on large canvases with threads and steel reflecting spheres. The exhibition will be open from the 6th until the 13th November 2010 (9:00 am – 21:00 pm). The opening will take place on the 6th of November at 8:00 pm.
“In my work I use thread on wood, usually making diverse geometrical shapes. The thread creates all the light and forms; I consider thread as the primary element of painting, the basis of it, the first material of the canvas. In this way I am trying to get back to this element and to make it be the object of observation instead of any decoration on it. Furthermore, I use the “eye of the painting”, a steel reflecting sphere, which is also the main subject of my work. The painting can observe the observer and vice-versa. The painting is not only a passive object which is observed, but it can in this way watch the observers back: through the “Eye” the observer can watch the painting watching him and then himself being part of the painting.” Yiannis Sakellis
