Yiorgos Bellapaisiotis - Flesh vs Spirit
The opening of the exhibition will be made on Tuesday 17 March at 7pm
by the First Lady of the Republic of Cyprus.
A bold concept idea born in New York, and became the new visual artwork of artist, Yiorgos Bellapaisiotis. Part of the artwork from this series has been presented during the Spring 2020 New York Fashion Week, on September 2019.
After last year’s massive success of his exhibition concept ‘Beyond Gender & Sexual Orientation’ in Nicosia, Yiorgos Bellapaisiotis returns back to Cyprus with his new exhibition titled, ‘FLESH vs SPIRIT’.
Bellapaisiotis was asked by CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers in America) to present part of this new artwork during the Spring2020 New York Fashion Week at a charity event with the participation of various prestigious artists in order to raise money for prevention of Child Trafficking.
This time the artist explores through his artwork the direct interference in the relationship between the FLESH (who we are as tangible beings externally) and the SPIRIT (our inner spiritual divine world) from external social/spiritual institutions. He touches upon the fact that these two components in many occasions cannot coexist due to external interferences. The equilibrium in one’s self is achieved by the ultimate balance of the FLESH and the SPIRIT and this is achieved when there is the freedom of individual expression supported by the path of acceptance...
In this exhibition his subjects are the victims of their own spiritual faith. Bellapaisiotis’ intention though is to celebrate and portray them rising above the harsh obstacles presented to them for something they've done no wrong. His subjects’ pride for leaving the life they choose to and not the one established for them by their spiritual institution / faith is visibly very vivid.
Bellapaisiotis’ artwork is a reflective journey on individualism and freedom of expression and it provokes renewed hope to people who have lost these two elements.
The artist interprets art as exhilarating and intriguing his creative ideas are stimulated by the concepts of life, death and the spirit. His artwork done on recycled wood is driven by his attempt to transcribe life onto dead wood, which he collected from the streets of New York, bestowing it with another chance to ‘live again’, ‘breathe again’ and come back in an altered form.
Commenting on his creative journey for this exhibition, Bellapaisiotis emphasizes that his endeavor was to capture the inner emotional world of his subjects rather than just depict their external appearance. This is one of the main characteristics of the aesthetic of his work.
‘My voice for my new concept became the visual world for this series of paintings and my focal point for these creations was to celebrate the diversity we see today and highlight its individuality which for some institutions is nothing but a shame, that many times leads to a harsh painful judgment and punishment.'
